Horizons Groups – Mid Winter

Dec’22

The challenging weather of the last couple of months has done nothing but presented opportunities for Child Passions to emerge even more.

We had quite a few (most!) weeks of rain and where there is rain there is ….

We are grateful for what we fondly call “The Crater” in the woods, a place where water, mud and ice can form easily, a place that has the pull of a magnet when it is time for free play.

We always think of our non-human neighbours at this time of year too and more specifically, how do they get enough to eat. We discovered that badgers have a sense of smell 700 times stronger than ours and that garden birds don’t have much at all.

And who hibernates? Our spontaneous adventure up the hill to the Tower reminded us that bats do, and that distance is an interesting concept – what looks far sometimes isn’t, and what doesn’t look far sometimes is.

The fire is always a great comfort on the really cold days and we start to think about our ancestors and what they did with fire. The ancient art of bowl burning is proving popular although no-one has finished their bowls yet.

Hot drinks and stories help us take a rest in the afternoons and remind us how much we love our wee village.

We wish everyone a Happy Solstice when it comes and look forward to gathering again next year.
